Prior to his Senate election, DeMint founded a market research and advertising firm and served two terms in the U.S. House.

DeMint has been known as a tireless advocate for smaller government, individual liberty, a strong national defense, and traditional values. While in the Senate, he founded the Senate Conservatives Fund, an independent, grassroots organization dedicated to "electing true conservative leaders to the U.S. Senate who have the courage and support to defend the Constitution of the United States."

He has authored four books, including his newest, Now or Never: Saving America for Economic Collapse. He and his wife, Debbie, have four married children and enjoy being grandparents.
